The port of Amsterdam has applied for a permit for mooring so-called super yachts. These are large sailing and motor yachts, manned by professional crews. The intention is for the yachts to moor at berth ‘De Ruijterkade West’ (DRW), near the Havengebouw in Amsterdam.
The superyachts can be berthed if there is no reservation for a river cruise ship at one of the jetties. The yachts that moor there are approximately eighty meters long and can stay for a maximum of seven nights.
Reclaiming industry
The plans for the new mooring location are part of a larger plan: Amsterdam must again bring superyachts to the city and also build and renovate them. They used to do no different, but those activities were put on the back burner in recent decades until recently, for example, the new name, RGB illuminated lettering or services such as boat lettering maintenance done abroad.
The Amsterdam port is now going to change that. With the new mooring location, but also with a new yard in the Western Docklands that will be completed this year. There, superyachts up to 160 meters can dock for renovation or boat lettering
Service
The Amsterdam Ruijterkade West will only be used for mooring. “A kind of service” says a spokesperson for the port authority. “That is very nice for owners of those yachts when they are in transit, or for example a few days later want to have their yacht repaired or re-lettering by Yachtsigns from Patrick de Letter ”
Fourth location
Superyachts can currently moor at three locations in Amsterdam: the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam on the Piet Heinkade, the Scheepvaartmuseum and the Amsterdam Marina in Noord. A fourth location has now been added: the Ruijterkade West. The aim: in the long term, having a maximum of fifteen superyachts moored at DRW per year.
It is expected that more and more superyachts will find the Amsterdam port in the coming years. Last summer, the Mexican superyacht Forever One lay at the Maritime Museum for three days. Superyacht Anna also visited the Amsterdam harbor. It was already two years ago that such a superyacht was last moored in the Oosterdok.
